Sergei Mikhailovich

Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii did so much for the art of photography and film. All that aside, though, this photo is incredible. The colors lush and saturated; the composition ideal; and the focus original and attention-getting. The blue, yellow, green, and purple in his robe are so rich and lush that the fact the photo was taken in 1911 is absolutely mind-blowing. Nearly one hundred years ago and the photo looks as if it were taken yesterday with a digital camera!! I also love the inclusion of his shoes peeking from beneath as well as the doors flanking him on either side. A lot of photographers wouldn’t have included them but they give it a larger amount of realism.
